Chelsea have been urged to consider a surprise move for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, with former United defender Quinton Fortune describing the Cameroon international as a potential “outstanding” addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Fortune believes Onana’s ability to play out from the back could make him an attractive option for Chelsea as Alonso continues to shape his squad at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have invested heavily across the squad this summer but have yet to bring in a new goalkeeper, leaving Robert Sanchez as the leading option between the posts.

United remain in control of his long-term future, with the goalkeeper contracted at Old Trafford until June 2028 and his current loan reportedly containing no option for Trabzonspor to sign him permanently.

That arrangement means a move to CHELSEA would be complicated, but Fortune has nevertheless identified Onana as a player who could thrive at a club seeking to build attacks from deep.

Speaking to Premier Bet, the former United midfielder highlighted the goalkeeper’s distribution and ability to launch attacks from his own penalty area. Fortune suggested those qualities could make Onana an asset not only for Chelsea but also for other Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa

‘Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,’ Fortune told Premier Bet.

‘You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point.

‘When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it.

‘He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding.’

Chelsea’s goalkeeping department remains an area of interest for Alonso as he prepares for his first competitive season in charge. Filip Jorgensen has departed, while Sanchez is currently expected to compete for the starting role.

Fortune’s recommendation therefore comes at a time when CHELSEA could potentially be considering whether additional competition is required in goal. The former United player believes Onana’s technical qualities would fit the demands of modern football and Alonso’s preference for possession-based build-up
