Former Chelsea defender Frank LeBoeuf believes the club needs to replace Robert Sanchez. He expressed his concern about the goalkeeper’s ability on the ball.
The Blues signed Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023. He is now their first-choice goalkeeper and kept nine clean sheets in 35 Premier League games last season. However, the Spaniard has also made multiple errors in the last two seasons, which have turned out to be costly.

Sanchez is expected to stay at Chelsea this summer under new manager Xabi Alonso. However, Frank LeBoeuf believes they need to replace him, as he said on ESPN FC:
“I still have a question mark over the goalkeeper. Sanchez can be very good on the line, but with his feet, he’s always creating issues and scares the fans when he has the ball at his feet.”
LaBeouf also spoke about the need for the Blues to trim their squad, saying:
“I think they have like 45 players. They have to get rid of some of them. And of course, Xabi Alonso will have to get a selection of the players and maybe get rid of 15, at least 15 players. That’s insane, but it’s what he has to do. Otherwise, you cannot work.”
He added that Chelsea and Alonso “need to get rid” of some players to ensure a good dressing room.
Frank LaBeouf explains what would be a good season for Chelsea
The Blues had a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. They failed to win any trophy and finished 10th in the Premier League standings. They also parted ways with two managers, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea have now appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager and will hope to bounce back in the 2026-27 season. Sharing his expectations for this campaign, Frank LeBoeuf said:
“A good season is, of course, in the Champions League fourth or fifth place spots. But for me, the only club right now where I’m going to say is pretty sure to get into the first five is Arsenal. The others have doubts everywhere. City, we don’t know what’s going to happen with the new coach. Liverpool, with the team, we don’t really know.”
He added that “nobody is assured to be in the first four” except Arsenal right now. Hence, he believes Chelsea should be targeting a place in the Top 5. The Blues will begin their campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.
