Lucy Bronze has backed the prospect of European teams boycotting FIFA competitions as tensions continue ahead of next year’s Women’s World Cup. The Chelsea defender believes a Lucy Bronze World Cup boycott stance is justified if UEFA decides stronger action is required to protect the future of the game.
Bronze was speaking in Auckland ahead of Chelsea Women’s historic pre-season fixture against Auckland FC on Saturday.
Her comments follow UEFA maintaining its threat to withdraw from FIFA competitions following a dispute over the governance of world football and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
In a fresh interview published on Friday, Bronze backed UEFA’s position and made clear players may ultimately have to accept missing major tournaments.
The England international said that if a boycott becomes necessary, “that has to happen.”

UEFA reaffirmed its threat on Thursday despite FIFA continuing to back Infantino.
The dispute centres partly on controversy surrounding the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise scheme. FIFA subsequently withdrew the plan, but UEFA has said the conditions required for it to abandon the threat of a boycott have not yet been satisfied.
For Bronze, the issue goes beyond whether individual players want to appear at another World Cup.
The Chelsea defender argued that decisions have to consider younger generations and the long-term direction of football, even if established internationals ultimately sacrifice the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage.
Bronze’s comments carry particular weight given her experience with England and Chelsea.

Chelsea face Auckland FC Women at Eden Park on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm local time.
It will be the first time a Women’s Super League club has played a match in New Zealand and the first visit to the country by any Chelsea team.
Sonia Bompastor’s squad will then travel to Australia to face the A-League Women All-Stars in Sydney on Wednesday.
For now, Bronze’s comments have added her voice to a much bigger debate.
