Chelsea have completed the signing of England international Jordan Henderson, the club announced in an official statement. The midfielder has signed a two-year contract until the end of the 2026/27 season. The 36-year-old has joined on a free transfer after his Brentford contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Henderson’s signing is a clear snub to the youth policy that has prevailed at Stamford Bridge since the BlueCo consortium took over in 2022. Chelsea hadn’t played anyone over the age of 30 in their previous 123 matches, a run that dates back to Thiago Silva’s last appearance in May 2024.
Speaking to the club’s media, Henderson explained why the move to west London made sense for him:
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
The Sunderland academy product has a seriously impressive CV to offer Cobham. He has won eight major honours with Liverpool, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. He also has 91 caps for England, a runners-up medal at Euro 2020 and third place at this summer’s World Cup.
Jordan Henderson Opens Up on How Much He Looks Up to Xabi Alonso
This particular deal has a certain delicious circularity. Henderson’s professional debut came at Stamford Bridge in November 2008, a chastening afternoon in which Sunderland were utterly dismantled in a 5-0 loss. The weekend before, Liverpool had brought to an end Chelsea’s 86-game unbeaten home league record with a single strike from Xabi Alonso.
Almost 18 years later, the veteran will go under the tutelage of the very man who ended that record. Henderson said he sought out opinions widely before committing himself to the Spaniard’s fledgling project in west London:
“I had huge admiration for Xabi as a player, and now I have huge admiration for him as a manager. What he’s done over the last few years has been pretty special. Everyone that I know that has either worked with him or played with him has said very good things. Not one person had a bad thing to say about him. That speaks for him very highly. Then when I spoke to him, I got a very good feeling that it would be an honour to come and play under him.”
This endorsement fits perfectly into the blueprint Alonso deployed with such devastating effect in Germany. He added experienced pros like Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann to a very young Leverkusen squad and made the club unbeaten domestic double winners in 2024. Henderson and Danny Welbeck are now the embodiment of that philosophy at Stamford Bridge with the Blues kicking off their campaign against Fulham on 24 August.
