Arsenal and Netherlands defender will miss the upcoming World Cup after failing to recover in time from his groin injury, the Dutch FA confirmed on Monday.

Jurrien Timber suffered a groin injury in March and has missed significant time since. The Arsenal defender featured in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, but will miss the FIFA World Cup, as the KNVB confirmed on Monday.

“The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner,” the football association said in a statement posted on social media.

“In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan.”

Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was placed on the standby list by manager Ronald Koeman, has been called up to the 26-man squad as Timber’s replacement.
