Last year, he came agonising close to winning the most prestigious individual award in football, only for PSG’s Dembele to pip him to the post.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Yamal admitted his disappointment in not winning it but is looking on the bright side.

“To be honest, that day I thought I was going to win it,” he said.

“I honestly believe it was good for me that Dembele won it, so that I could develop. Perhaps it wasn’t the right time for me.”

Yamal is once again among the favourites to win it this year, but with competition from the likes of Dembele and Harry Kane, it could come down to who performs best at the World Cup.
