The Blues have made Alex Scott one of their top targets in the position, although he has also been on the radar of United during this transfer window.
Baleba joining Michael Carrick’s side would see them bring up three new midfield signings this summer, and leave it unlikely they would add another.
This in theory gives the Blues a free run at signing Scott, whether that be during this transfer window or at another stage in the near future.
While Chelsea like the Bournemouth man a lot, the likelihood of them signing a player in that position depends on what the future holds for Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentine has made his desire to leave Stamford Bridge no secret this summer, however is running out of options in his aim to secure a permanent move.
Manchester City missed out on Chelsea’s reported deadline to part ways with Fernandez, however are still expected to test the Blues’ resolve with a bid before the end of the window.
Chelsea may be forced into a frantic effort to sign a new midfielder if this does happen, and Scott will be near the top of their list for replacements.
Therefore, it is a major boost for Chelsea that United look like they won’t be pursuing with the Englishman, allowing the Blues a clearer path to his signature.
