Reggie Walsh will spend the 2026/27 season at Wigan Athletic after Chelsea sanctioned the 17-year-old midfielder’s first senior loan.
Walsh has already made two competitive appearances for Chelsea and featured twice during Xabi Alonso’s pre-season preparations, but the Blues have now decided regular League One football represents the best next step in his development.
The destination carries particular significance.
Wigan were also where Chelsea captain Reece James took his first major steps in senior football before breaking into the Stamford Bridge first team.

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that Walsh will spend the entire campaign with the League One club.
The midfielder joined Chelsea as an Under-8 and became the third-youngest player in the club’s history when he made his senior debut against Djurgarden aged just 16 years and 193 days. He subsequently featured in last season’s Champions League win over Ajax.
Walsh also played an important role as Chelsea finished top of the Premier League 2 table and helped the Under-18s beat Manchester City in the national final.

Walsh is now taking that process outside Cobham.
Reece James precedent gives Chelsea reason for optimism
James spent the 2018/19 season at Wigan and made 46 appearances during his first full campaign in senior football.
He won both Wigan’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards before returning to Chelsea and establishing himself in the first team.
Walsh is younger and will be playing in League One rather than the Championship, so the situations are not identical.
But Chelsea are again trusting Wigan with one of Cobham’s highest-rated prospects.
Walsh has already shown he can handle brief exposure to Chelsea’s senior side.
His season at Wigan will now reveal whether he can follow James in turning a first senior loan into a genuine Stamford Bridge breakthrough.
