Como head coach Cesc Fàbregas has expressed his delight after the Italian club completed the signing of Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea, adding the England defender to an ambitious squad preparing for another season at the top level.

Chalobah completed his permanent move to Como on Sunday, ending an association with Chelsea that stretched back almost two decades. The 27-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Serie A club, with the transfer reported to be worth around €30 million ($34.7 million), potentially rising with add-ons.

The defender joined CHELSEA’s academy at the age of eight and progressed through the club’s youth system before establishing himself in the senior side. He made 47 appearances in all competitions during the previous season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Fàbregas played an important role in convincing Chalobah to make the move to Italy, with the defender acknowledging that the Como coach wanted him as part of the club’s plans. The pair previously shared the CHELSEA environment, and Fàbregas’ vision for Como is understood to have been an important factor in the player’s decision

Como 1907 Head Coach Cesc Fàbregas said: “Trevoh is an important signing for us and a player who represents the level of ambition we have at this club. He has competed and won at the highest level, but he is also hungry to begin a new chapter and continue improving.

“He gives us strength, speed and personality in defence, as well as the technical quality to build from the back. He is a leader who can raise the level of the team, and I am very happy that he has chosen Como.”

The opportunity to work with Cesc Fàbregas, a familiar face from his Chelsea days. Fàbregas has overseen Como’s remarkable rise, with the club having reached Serie A only two years ago before securing Champions League qualification last season.

That trajectory makes this much more than a comfortable move to Italy. Como are an ambitious club who want to keep moving forward, and Chalobah has joined at precisely the right moment.

Serie A should suit him, too. Italian football has long placed enormous emphasis on defensive organisation, positioning and tactical intelligence. Chalobah’s physicality and ability to operate in different defensive systems could make him a particularly useful player in that environment.

Perhaps most importantly, though, this is a chance for Chalobah to escape the constant noise surrounding his status at CHELSEA
