AS Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini wants a new attacker for the left side. As reported by The Sun, the Serie A club have put Gittens on a short list of wide players this summer. Gasperini wants a player who can drift inside, help build attacks and press hard from the front. That style closely matches the way Gittens played during his time in Germany with Dortmund. Roma view Gittens as a player who could add real pace to their attack. A loan deal in Serie A might suit him better than a rushed full move away from the Blues.

During his last season in Germany, Gittens took part in more than a dozen goals for Dortmund. That strong form helped push Chelsea to move quickly and sign him up last summer. Yet regular game time under then-boss Enzo Maresca was hard to find for much of the season. A new start in Italian football could now give him a chance to find that early form again.

Gasperini also wants his wide players to press high and win the ball back quickly. Gittens showed that work rate often during his time in the Bundesliga, chasing down defenders after losing possession. Premier League scouts have long rated his pace as one of the fastest among young wingers. Bringing that same intensity to Serie A would make him a real asset for Roma this year.

Roma’s wage structure could complicate a transfer

Roma work with a tight wage cap of about £3million a year for most new signings. That rule makes a straight full deal for Gittens hard to close before the deadline. As reported by The Sun, Sports chief Tony D’Amico is said to be weighing up whether a loan would suit both sides better.

Roma had first looked at RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa, who is priced at close to £50million. Lyon forward Malick Fofana has also come into the picture, with a fee nearer £40million. Gittens now looks like a cheaper and more direct choice next to both wingers. Chelsea paid about £52million for him last summer, though a full sale looks unlikely for now. That gap in price could make the England Under-21 international a more likely target for Roma.

Chelsea set for a wider squad clearout

Gittens is not the only Chelsea player facing real doubt at Stamford Bridge this summer. As reported by BBC, Xabi Alonso is trimming a bloated squad before the summer transfer window finally shuts. Several fringe players have already been strongly linked with exits from the club this month. Jamie Gittens has found it hard to hold down a regular spot since his costly move last year. A fresh test in Serie A might help him sharpen his form and rebuild his confidence on the pitch.

From a tactical perspective, Roma would be taking a smart risk rather than a wild punt on Gittens. His raw pace and directness are genuine qualities, even if his end product still needs work. Chelsea, for their part, may want to protect his value with a loan rather than a full sale.
