It was a new low for the North London club who came dangerously close to dropping down to the Championship which could have crushed their reputation and finances.
Now, as the team prepare for a fresh season in which Liverpool legend Andrew Robertson will strengthen the squad, Alderweireld has spoken to Standard Sport about how he is open to joining the club and helping them bounce back to being European contenders.
“I was asked, ‘Imagine if Spurs asked you, would you want to help the team or the club?’ I said, ‘Yeah, why not?’ Let’s see.
“I’m not saying that I will fix every problem. Of course not. But if they ask me what I think, of course I want to try to help. But I’m not saying I can fix it all.
“Antwerp was an unbelievable end of my career, and that’s the club of my heart because it’s my city. But I’m so thankful with Spurs, my best period as a football player at my peak.
“I think I’ve always had a very, very, very good connection with the fans, with the club. Yeah, so I’m very grateful. If I can help, if they want my help, why not?”
Tottenham hierarchy promised a “full reset” and their commitment to building a team capable of competing at the higher end of English and European football in a message to supporters after the season ended.
Tottenham assured fans they “will invest across multiple transfer windows to rebuild, balance and strengthen, with this summer representing an important first step in that work” and Alderweireld could join the initiative.
